Research Excellence Awards
As part of its continuing commitment to supporting and recognising research excellence, in 2010 the College founded its Research Excellence Awards.
These Awards recognise achievement and celebrate outstanding contributions to research in the fields of optometry, optics and vision science. The different Awards and further details about each are listed below.
The 2011 Awards were made at the College Diploma Ceremony on 8 November at Central Hall, Westminster. All Award winners to date are listed on the individual Award page.
- The Arthur Bennett Prize - inaugural Award 2012 (nomination only)
For outstanding research, this biennial award is open to researchers working anywhere in the world and comes with a bursary of £5,000.
This award is to recognise research that has had a significant impact on research and scientific knowledge or on clinical practice in optometry and related fields of eye and vision care.
- The Neil Charman Medal for Research (nomination or application)
The College's annual award for outstanding research by College members, this award comes with a bursary of £1,000.
- The George Giles Postgraduate Research Prize (nomination or application)
For outstanding postgraduate research by College members, with a bursary of £500.
- The Philip Cole Prize (nomination or application)
For excellence in practice-based research by College members, with a bursary of £500.
- The Bernard Gilmartin OPO Award (chosen by the OPO Editorial Board)
This Award is given annually to the most highly regarded paper published in Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics in the preceding five years.
- The Giles Van Colle Memorial Award for Paediatric Optometry, awarded in conjunction with the Giles Van Colle Memorial Foundation (nomination or application)
This award is for outstanding research or clinical case work relating to paediatric optometry.
