Board

The Board consists of 11 trustees:
  • Four Elected Officers, elected by Council as Officers and automatically becoming trustees
  • Six regionally elected Council members, elected as trustees by Council
  • One lay Council member, elected as trustee by Council

Additionally, the board of trustees can co-opt up to three additional trustees, with Council’s approval, two of whom must be full time members.  The other co-optee could be a full member, non-voting member or member of the Lay Advisory Panel.

Remit

  • With the Chief Executive, develop long-term strategic plans;
  • Formulate policy governing organisational activity, the behaviour of trustees and all aspects of Board business;
  • Approve and monitor the College's Business Plan;
  • Ensure that there are adequate financial resources to support the Business Plan;
  • Approve the annual accounts and the budget, monitor spending and ensure that risks are identified and managed;

Immediate Past President and current Board Chairman

Cindy is Consultant Optometrist in the Department of Optometry at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and also lectures at the University of Manchester. Cindy is a College examiner, a College Trustee and Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Sanjay Patel BSc MCOptom

Sanjay Patel BSc MCOptom

Sanjay qualified from UMIST in 1991 and currently works in high street practice as a joint venture partner.  He sits on the Specsavers Professional Advancement Committee and is a College Trustee.  Sanjay is also the Chairman of DOCET and Chairman of the College's Membership and Standards Committee.

David Parkins MSc FCOptom FEAOO

Vice President

David is the Clinical Quality Lead on the Bexley Clinical Commissioning Cabinet, having previously been Chair of the Professional Executive Committee of Bexley Care Trust. His remit is quality assurance of all commissioned services as well as optometric/ ophthalmology pathway redesign. He is Chair of the 111 Programme Board for NHS South East London, Optometric Adviser for NHS Diabetic  Eye Screening in Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich,  and also works in independent and hospital practice in South East London. David is a Fellow of the European Academy of Optometry and Optics, a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers and has been awarded Honorary Life Membership of Vision Aid Overseas.

Dr Peter Allen BSc(Hons) PhD MCOptom

Dr Peter Allen BSc(Hons) PhD MCOptom

Since graduating from City University in 1990, Peter went on to do a PhD and Post Graduate Certificate Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, both from Anglia Ruskin University, where he now works as the Director of Clinics and Principal Lecturer.  His current research interests include refractive error development, vision and reading and visual function in specialist populations. As well as being on the Board of Trustees, Peter is an assessor and examiner for the College and is a member of the Education and Investigating committees.

Dr Kamlesh Chauhan PhD BSc MCOptom

President

Kamlesh is President of the College. He qualified in 1990 and has developed wide experience of Optometry having worked a variety of roles within eye care; most recently industry.  He is currently the Head of THE VISION CARE INSTITUTE®, UK at Johnson and Johnson Medical Ltd.

Dr David MacVeigh PhD FCOptom

David works for Boots Opticians Ltd at their Newton Abbot practice. Since June 2009, he has also been employed as the Optometric Advisor for Devon PCT and Torbay Care Trust. He is on the Professional Advisory Committee of Diabetes UK where he represents Optometry. David is a College Trustee.

Mary-Ann Sherratt PhD MCOptom

Mary-Ann Sherratt PhD MCOptom

Mary-Ann lives in Cardiff. Since qualifying she has worked as a locum and resident optometrist, in independent and multiple practice environments, around South Wales and the South West. She works as part of a multidisciplinary team at Bristol Eye Hospital in the Shared Care Department. An experienced Associate Tutor in the contact lens clinics at Cardiff University, she is also a visiting lecturer.

Treasurer

Rob is a College past President and is now the College Treasurer. He is also a member of the GOC and a founder Board member of the European Academy of Optometry & Optics. He is the Managing Director of iCare Consulting Ltd. (providing clinical, technical and professional services and advice to the optical sector) and the Vice President of Operations for PowerPractice.

Dr Edward Mallen BSc PhD MCOptom

Dr Edward Mallen is a Reader in Physiological Optics at the University of Bradford, and a practising optometrist in the West Midlands. He is Admissions Tutor for the undergraduate programme in optometry at Bradford, and is an examiner for the College of Optometrists Final Assessment. Ed is also Chairman of the College of Optometrists Research Committee.

Susan Wilford BSc FCOptom

Susan is a joint venture partner based in Sheffield.  Since qualifying in 1976 she has worked in both the independent and multiple sector including a dedicated Contact Lens practice.  Susan is a member of the Sheffield Local Optometric Committee and represents the LOC at Primary Care Trust meetings, including information and technology and glaucoma review meetings.  Sue is a PQE Supervisor and a College Trustee.
